This 3D mixed media self-portrait is what I created for the Hornby Island Self Portrait Artshow in July 2014. Images by participatory artists could be imaginary, spiritual, realistic or just a feeling or any form the artist wanted to take to portray themselves. Mine is whimsicial and comes from a feeling that I strive for....that of serenity, peace and inner happiness.
I made this as a 3D image using a cast of my face that was done in a workshop in Prince Rupert in the 1980's. The cast sat in a bucket for over 20 years so was somewhat warped. Trying to come up with something unique, I used the cast, added molding clay, smoothed and attached it to the cradleboard using paper mache. I then painted the background as the westcoast, salish sea, with a moon in the dark sky. The face was painted and hair and other items added as I went. I am a pisces and I love the water and the Westcoast. I feel I am somewhat of a moonchild as well as I can rarely sleep during the full moon phase. Because I am a Canadian through and through, I added the maple leaf.
This was a lot of fun to create and it gives me a sense of peace and harmony within!
